History of Château Lafleur
The history of Château Lafleur begins in 1872 when Henri Greloud, a local vintner, acquired a small parcel of land in Pomerol and began planting vineyards. Over the next few decades, Lafleur remained a relatively unknown estate, producing wines in small quantities for local consumption. However, in the mid-20th century, the estate began to gain recognition for the exceptional quality of its wines, thanks to the dedication and skill of the Greloud and Robin families, who owned and managed the estate.
Château Lafleur remained a family-owned estate throughout the 20th century, with the Robin sisters, Marie and Thérèse, playing a particularly important role in maintaining the estate’s reputation. Under their stewardship, Lafleur’s wines became highly sought after by collectors and connoisseurs, earning a reputation as one of the finest wines in Bordeaux.
In 1985, Jacques and Sylvie Guinaudeau, the current owners, took over the management of Château Lafleur. Under their leadership, the estate has continued to thrive, producing wines that are celebrated for their depth, complexity, and ability to age for decades. Today, Château Lafleur is considered one of the crown jewels of Pomerol, known for its dedication to quality and its unique approach to winemaking.
The Terroir of Château Lafleur
The terroir of Château Lafleur is one of the estate’s most distinctive features, contributing to the unique character and quality of its wines. The estate’s 4.5 hectares of vineyards are located on the famous Pomerol plateau, where the soils are a mix of gravel, clay, and sand. This terroir, combined with the estate’s meticulous vineyard management, allows Château Lafleur to produce wines that are both powerful and elegant, with a remarkable ability to age gracefully over decades.
The vineyard is planted with 50% Merlot and 50% Cabernet Franc, an unusual blend for Pomerol, where Merlot typically dominates. This balance between Merlot and Cabernet Franc gives Château Lafleur its distinctive style, with Merlot providing richness and roundness, and Cabernet Franc contributing structure, freshness, and aromatic complexity.
The unique combination of soils, exposure, and grape varieties allows Château Lafleur to produce wines that are both intense and refined, with a remarkable depth of flavour and a long, lingering finish.
Winemaking at Château Lafleur
Winemaking at Château Lafleur is a meticulous process that emphasizes precision and attention to detail. The grapes are hand-harvested and sorted to ensure that only the finest fruit is used in the winemaking process. Fermentation takes place in a combination of stainless steel and concrete vats, allowing for precise control over the extraction of flavours and tannins.
The wines are then aged in French oak barrels for 15 to 18 months, with about 50% new oak used each year. This ageing process enhances the wines' complexity and depth, allowing the tannins to soften and the flavours to integrate harmoniously. The result is a wine that is both approachable in its youth and capable of developing greater complexity and nuance over time.
