History of Château Pichon Baron
The history of Château Pichon Baron dates back to the late 17th century when it was founded by Pierre de Rauzan. The estate originally formed part of a larger property, Château Pichon Longueville, which was split into two separate entities in 1850 due to an inheritance. This division resulted in the creation of Château Pichon Longueville Baron and Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, each with its unique identity and terroir.
In 1855, Château Pichon Baron was classified as a Second Growth, reflecting its status as one of the finest wine producers in Bordeaux. The estate continued to produce exceptional wines throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, but like many Bordeaux châteaux, it faced challenges during the economic downturns and wars of the 20th century. In 1987, the estate was acquired by AXA Millésimes, the wine branch of the French insurance company AXA, which marked the beginning of a new era of investment and revitalization.
Under the ownership of AXA Millésimes, significant investments were made in the vineyards, cellars, and winemaking facilities to restore Château Pichon Baron to its former glory. The estate has since regained its reputation as one of the top producers in Pauillac, consistently producing wines that are highly sought after by wine lovers and collectors worldwide.
Terroir of Château Pichon Baron
The terroir of Château Pichon Baron is one of its most defining features, contributing to the unique character and quality of its wines. The estate’s 73 hectares of vineyards are situated on the prime gravelly soils of Pauillac, directly across from Château Latour. These deep gravel soils provide excellent drainage and are well-suited for the cultivation of Cabernet Sauvignon, the dominant grape variety at Pichon Baron, as well as Merlot and a small percentage of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.
The estate’s location on the Left Bank, near the Gironde estuary, benefits from a maritime climate that moderates temperatures and protects the vines from frost, allowing for a long growing season. The combination of well-drained gravel soils and a favorable microclimate enables the production of wines with deep concentration, powerful tannins, and excellent ageing potential.
Winemaking at Château Pichon Baron
Winemaking at Château Pichon Baron is carried out with meticulous attention to detail, combining traditional techniques with modern technology to produce wines of the highest quality. The vineyard is planted primarily with Cabernet Sauvignon (65%) and Merlot (30%), with small amounts of Cabernet Franc (3%) and Petit Verdot (2%) rounding out the blend. This blend reflects the estate’s commitment to producing wines with both power and finesse, showcasing the best of the Pauillac terroir.
The grapes are hand-harvested and undergo rigorous sorting to ensure that only the finest fruit is used in the winemaking process. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, which allows for precise control over the extraction of flavours and tannins. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels for 18 to 20 months, with about 50% to 80% new oak used each year, depending on the vintage. This ageing process enhances the complexity and structure of the wine, allowing it to develop additional layers of flavour and achieve a harmonious balance.

Château Pichon Baron is known for producing wines that are quintessentially Pauillac in style. The wines are typically full-bodied, with firm tannins, deep colour, and a complex bouquet of black fruits, cedar, tobacco, and earthy notes. On the palate, the wines offer a rich and layered experience, with flavours of blackcurrant, blackberry, and plum, complemented by notes of spice, graphite, and a hint of chocolate.
